How do I know if Michael is the right voice teacher for me?Taking voice lessons can be a very personal process, and one can feel vulnerable singing in front of someone new. While there are "good" and "bad" voice teachers, ultimately, every singer must find someone that they are comfortable working with. A good teacher should be reputable, honest, and should always challenge you to become better, while being mindful of vocal health. We suggest you try a few voice lessons with a teacher before making any decisions, to see if it is the right fit for you. Beyond making sure a voice teacher has the knowledge to teach proper vocal technique or to effectively coach material, personality and personal style will likely be factors you will want to consider when starting voice lessons. What is the difference between a voice teacher and a vocal coach?A voice teacher primarily focuses on vocal technique, whereas a vocal coach primarily focuses on coaching material. Michael Jacobs provides both voice lessons and vocal coaching in New York or online via Skype and FaceTime. This means that you get to work with someone who has expertise in helping you to improve the way you sing as well as your performance. Both are necessary parts of your vocal training. Do you have evening and weekend appointments?Yes, although evening slots are often the first to go. Make sure to schedule well in advance or schedule a regular lessons time if you would like one of our coveted evening spots. Lessons at our studio in midtown Manhattan are by appointment only. Do online voice lessons work?We provide online voice lessons via Skype and FaceTime. Generally, we provide these to students who are either on tour or out of town for work on a limited basis. Skype lessons can be an effective way to coach material, learn technique and to work on building your audition book, however, whenever possible, we suggest having an in-person voice lesson at least once every few months. Do you work with people who are primarily dancers or actors?Providing voice lessons for dancers and actors is one of our specialties at Michael Jacobs Vocal Studio! Michael's approach, which integrates a lot of physical stretches and body work has been particularly effective for dancers. Michael wants each of his students to become the best singer that they are capable of becoming and encourages each student to take this attitude, as well. Our students are never limited by being put into a box based on previous experience. What can I expect at my first voice lesson?A first voice lesson is an opportunity for you and Michael to better get acquainted with one another. You will start out by discussing your goals and background, and learning a bit about Michael's teaching methods. You will then engage in some basic stretches and diagnostic vocal exercises, followed by singing a little bit of a song or two. At the end, you and Michael will discuss what he sees and you will collaboratively come up with a plan for moving forward on your vocal journey! |
